Prescriptions

Repeat Prescriptions

You can request a repeat prescription on-line (to sign up to this free service either click ‘register for on-line services’ in the useful links section of our website and follow the instructions, or ask a member of our reception staff next time you are in), drop it off at surgery or post it. To minimise the risk of error reception staff do not take requests for prescriptions over the phone.

Prescriptions requests will be ready for collection 72 working hours after receipt by the Practice.

Please check the tear off computer slip attached to your last prescription to ensure you still have repeat medication remaining.  If it says RUN OUT you may need to see the doctor, nurse or healthcare assistant before your repeat prescription can be issued.

If you have difficulty collecting a regular prescription most local pharmacies will order, collect and deliver medicines to your home. Ask your local pharmacy for further details. Alternatively if you would like us to post your prescription to you, please leave some stamped addressed envelopes at reception.

Please order repeat prescriptions in good time before your medication runs out. Emergency requests for same day prescriptions put strain on the system. We do our best to help in these instances where it is a true emergency, but cannot guarantee we will always be able to process and sign it the same day.

Please only order the repeat medication you require.  Medicines waste costs the NHS millions of pounds a year and unused medicines cannot be recycled.

We can send your Prescription to your pharmacy electronically

Over ¼ of our patients have their prescriptions send electronically to their normal pharmacy.  This saves a trip to surgery to collect it, and is particularly useful when the GP gives a prescription during a telephone consultation – you can go straight to the pharmacy to pick up your prescription without delay.

To sign up to this free service please call us, ask at reception next time you are in, or ask the clinician when they next give you a prescription.  It’s a simple click of a button for us to arrange this for you, and you can change your mind or select a new pharmacy at any time.  All you have to do is tell us which pharmacy you would like to nominate to receive your prescriptions.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

From 1 April 2023 charges for NHS prescriptions are:

  • £9.65 per prescription item
  • £31.25 for 3 month pre-payment certificate
  • £111.60 for 12 month pre-payment certificate
  • HRT PPC £19.30

If you pay for 4 or more prescription items in three months, or more than 12 items in 12 months, it may be cheaper to buy a pre-payment certificate (PPC).  For further advice on PPCs please speak to your local pharmacist or telephone 0845 850 0030.
